#6 Discovering Great Content for Your News Reader

RSS Feed Icons

Various types of RSS Feed icons

Now that you have a feed reader (your Feedly account), you can begin adding other newsfeeds that interest you. There are several ways you can locate newsfeeds:

  • When visiting your favorite websites – look for news feed icons that indicate the website provides it. Often a feed icon will be displayed somewhere in the navigation bar of the site.

Discovery Exercise:

  1. Explore some of the search tools noted above that can help you locate some news feeds.
  2. Leave a  comment on this post about your experience of getting started with RSS and feed readers:
  • What sites did you subscribe to?
  • How does the experience of reading Feedly compare to reading the original website?
  • Which do you prefer? Why?

  1. Yes. I do like RSS Feed but sometimes I subscribe to too many things to stay afloat. I like Career Blog and HMM Difficult Interactions. I also subscribe to some internal sites at work to keep me up to date.

  2. That is a bummer that Feedly is blocked for you. I also have it on my iPhone so it is always there for me that way if I want/need it. One thing that helps me from getting overwhelmed by too much content is organizing my feeds into folders. I basically have an A-list, a B-list and everything else. Sometimes I just have to use the “Mark all as read” button to reset the unread count and not worry about it. 😎

  3. I like Feedly because I can chunk my content, see what I’ve read and what I haven’t. As I mentioned before and implied by CLF, if you get too ambitious and pull too much information, it can be overwhelming. I like that it’s more of my “go-to” space. I only put in sites that I know will give me good information. While, I’m out and about surfing the internet or twitter, I find random things…these are standards I know are always here, and yes, that can be accessed via phone or tablet as well. Pretty handy. 🙂
